António Mateus Pinheiro

Co-founder and Board Member at Bn'ML-Behavioral and Molecular Lab and MD PhD Researcher at ICVS, Universidade do Minho, Portugal

António Mateus-Pinheiro (MD PhD) is graduated in Applied Biology, and subsequently in Medicine, by the University of Minho.

In 2016, he got his PhD at the School of Medicine, University of Minho (Portugal), under the supervision of Dr. Luísa Pinto, PhD, Professor Nuno Sousa, MD, PhD and in collaboration with Dr. Miguel Branco, at the Blizard Institute, Queen Mary University of London (UK). The title of his PhD project is "Adult Hippocampal Neural Plasticity: insights into its relevance in the stressed and depressed brain". In his thesis, he studied the relevance of adult hippocampal neural plasticity in the healthy brain and in the context of stress-related disorders, such as Anxiety and Depression. He received a project grant from Epigenesys European Network to conduct this study as a junior PI, in a international collaborative work.

He is currently an MD PhD researcher at the ICVS, University of Minho, and he authored and co-authored several publications, including original research articles, reviews, patents and book chapters (17 peer-reviewed publications, with an accumulated impact factor over 100). 

In 2012, he co-founded the spin-off company BnML - Behavioral & Molecular Lab. BnML offers customized pre-clinical behavioral and molecular analysis services for testing the potential of new therapeutic compounds. In recent years, António also devoted himself to the development of new tools for preclinical drug testing, and had additional training in several areas of management, accounting and entrepreneurship.
